Description
The SCALE driver s fr om CONCEPT
are based on a chip set that wa s
developed s pecifically fo r t he
reliable driv ing an d s afe o peration
of IGBTs and power MOSFETs.
The name “SCALE” is an acronym for the most
outstanding properties of the SCALE series of
drivers:
SCALE = Scaleable, Compact, All purpose,
Low cost and Easy to use.
The SCALE driv er i s a win ning proj ect of the competition organized by “Technology
Center Switzer land 1998”. A nd ABB Swit zerland AG honored the development of the
SCALE driver by distinguishing it as the “best power electronics project in 1998”.

Notes on Table 1
The v alues for “Vth1” an d “Vth 2” are
listed in Table 1 as a fun ction of the
reference resistance Rth.
The value in the “Vth 1” col umn cor-
responds to th e voltage threshold after
the response time has elapsed.
The value in the “Vth 2” col umn cor-
responds to the voltage which is set up
statically across the resistor R th. Th is
static value is typi cally reach ed after
between 10 and 15 µs.
The value in the “V CE(off)” co lumn
corresponds t o the collector-emitter
voltage value at which the pr otection
function is acti vated when the
external c ircuit is u sed a s sh own in
Fig. 4 with one or two D m diodes of
type 1N4007 connected in series.
A value of 1 n5 is used for the
response time capacitor Ca. If th is
capacitor is rated h igher or lower, th e
response time changes in proportion to
the ch ange in capaci tance, wh ereas
the thresholds Vth 1 an d Vth 2 remai n
practically un changed (they are
specified by Rth).
